THE GUAYAS RIVER
The Guayas River rises against the city
Guayaquil, Ecuador's main port and located on the right bank of the river, by
the confluence of the Duale Babahoyo and rivers. His mouth forms an estuary,
eastern province and together with the Estero Salado, west, forming a gulf,
called the Gulf of Guayaquil in the Pacific Ocean.
This basin covers an area of 40,000 km2
and is one of the largest potential resources available to Ecuador. It is the
largest river basin of the Pacific coast of South America.
The major tributaries are the Guayas
Babahoyo Duale and the rivers that flow to Vinces, Puebloviejo, Zapotal and
Yaguachi and form the densest redfluvial the coast and the most useful for
navigation.
Guayas Basin encompasses not only the
political and administrative boundaries of the province of Guayas but a much
wider area. Its economic projection favor nine provinces, especially Guayas,
Manabi and Los Rios Pichincha.
The plain of Guayas is provided with
fertile alluvial soils and therefore agriculture is the activity that benefits
a priority form of development of the Guayas river basin, in addition to
logging.
